Shuttlers: Designing a digital solution for the Lagos mobility problems

Presentation

Background

With millions of Nigerians using danfo minibusses and tricycles which can be very uncomfortable to commute to their various workplaces and destinations, mobility startups have sought to digitize the market. Shuttlers employed me to help them design a solution that addresses the issue of inefficient transportation means in Nigeria’s most renowned urban city, Lagos. Via its commuting platform, Shuttlers also provides companies with better mobility options for their employees. Shuttlers uses a proprietary routing algorithm to observe the user and how and when they commute daily then suggests to them shuttle options that will make moving around much easier. That way, when they aren’t on the app, so long as they have consented to push notifications, they get real-time suggestions on how best to move from point A to Point B. Also, shuttlers introduced e-tickets to their mobility/bus service, a first of its kind here in Nigeria where technology is gradually evolving in the transportation/logistics sector. Shuttlers let users who have steady weekly commute routes buy a subscription mobility plan that caters to them on the days they move around. Shuttlers being the first mass transit app in Nigeria became the first to provide these features to this particular subset of users.

Role

With the product manager having spec-ed out the requirement document, it was left for me to design a compelling digital app that helps users:

1. Make one-way and return trips via their phone app or web or create subscription plans for those who have fixed plans weekly (E.g. The working class who have to be on-site at work)

2. Provide companies that may want to charter buses with a clean and efficient way of doing so online

3. Allow users to make bookings through an in-app wallet and enable custom scannable QR ticket
